| ‘‘Glamis you are and Cawdor you shall be. That is what the old crones promised. King! You must be king! But how can it happen? The king is still alive. Not only that, he also has two sons who follow him to the throne
Lady Macbeth said these words to her husband. Macbeth told his wife about the prophecy of the three witches. Lady Macbeth was a very ambitious woman. Her words indicate that she always wanted greatness for herself and her husband. She is considering the situation and plotting the murder of the king
We will proceed no further in this business. He has recently honoured me; I can kill him. The king is a guest in our house. He’s here in double trust
Macbeth said this to Lady Macbeth. He didn’t like the idea of killing the king. He thought that the king is a loving noble man. In addition, Macbeth is his host who should protect him not murdering him himself.
I see you are a coward; you do not have the strength of will to do it
Lady Macbeth said this to her husband. When Macbeth protested against the idea of killing the king, Lady Macbeth became angry and told her husband that he’s coward and he is not a man in her eyes. At last, she persuaded him and made him change his mind.
Is this a dagger I see before me, the handle toward my hand? Are you a dagger of the mind, a false creation? I cannot see you but I know you are there, waiting to kill. On your blade, I see blood, which was not there before. It is a bloody business. Witchcraft celebrates. Will the witches’ prophecies come true?
Macbeth said this to himself before killing the king. He was imagining a dagger .His head was full of horrible thoughts of death and murder.
Sleep no more! Glamis has murdered sleep and Cawdor will sleep no more!
After Macbeth had killed the king, he imagined these nightmarish words saying that he will not sleep anymore. May be it was his guilty conscious
My hands are the same colour as yours. A little water clears us of this deed
Lady Macbeth said this to Macbeth. After killing the king and his servants, Macbeth returned to his wife. His hands were covered with blood and he was carrying the weapons. Lady Macbeth took the weapons from him and put them next to the servants. Her hands were covered with blood too. She thought that when she washes her hands, water would wash the guilt too!
Ring the bell! Murder and treason! Banque and Donalbain, Malcolm awake! Shake off your sleep! The king has been killed in the night! Who has done it?!
Macduff said these words. Macduff entered the king’s chamber. He discovered the murder of the king and his two servants. He was terrified and wanted to awake every one in the castle
Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble
The three witches said these rhyming words. When Macbeth visited them, he found them bent on a cauldron. They were putting strange ingredients and saying rhyming words
Now you secret, black and midnight hags. What is that you do?
Macbeth said these words to the three witches while visiting them. He felt unsafe and wanted to know his future. He found them bent on a cauldron, adding very strange ingredients. He got confused and asked them what they were doing.
Then live Macduff! Why need I fear you? But yet I will make sure I am safe! You shall not live!
Macbeth said these words to himself. At the witches’, He saw a spirit of a child covered with blood. It warned him of Macduff. However, it said that any person who is born of a woman would not harm him. He was relieved and said these words.
That would never be! Good! Who can move a forest from its roots?
Macbeth said these words to himself. A spirit of a child wearing a crown and carrying a branch told him that he would not be harmed until Great Birnam wood would come to High Dusinane hill. He felt safe because woods never move!
I need to know one thing. Will Banque’s children ever rule in this kingdom?
Macbeth asked the three witches this question. He wanted to know if Banquo’s sons would be kings or not. He felt threatened by them. The witches didn’t answer his question and vanished.
Out damned spot! Out I say! Who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him!
Lady Macbeth said this to herself. She became ill in mind and she walked while she was asleep. She said these words while sleepwalking. She was talking about the murder of the king. May be she was feeling guilty
Let every soldier chop down a branch and carry it before him
Malcolm said this to Macduff. Malcolm, Macduff and their army reached Birnam Wood. Birnam Wood was a thick wood with lots of branches. Malcolm ordered every soldier to chop a branch and carry it. It seemed, as Birnam Wood itself was moving. This shows that the witches deceived him.
If you speak falsely, you will hang alive upon the next tree until hanger ends you!
Macbeth said this to the servant. The servant saw Birnam Wood moving towards them. Macbeth became terrified when he heard this because a spirit told him that he wouldn’t be harmed until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill.
You waste your labour, Macduff. You cannot hurt me. I have a charmed life, which must not be taken by one woman born! Macbeth said this to Macduff. They were face to face on the battlefield. Macdudff was about to kill Macbeth. Macbeth was not afraid because a spirit told him that none of a woman born should harm him.
Despair thy charm and let that lying spirit whom thou hast served tell you that I was not born of woman , never as an ordinary manner of men is supposed to be born, but that I was taken out from my mother before proper time
Macduff said this to Macbeth. He was telling him that the witches were deceiving him and that he was not born of woman, but he was taken from his mother before proper time. Therefore, he could easily harm Macbeth.
Then live! We will parade you around with a painted board on which shall be written: ‘Here men may see the tyrant, the cruel Macbeth! Macduff said this to Macbeth. They were face to face on the battlefield. Macbeth asked Macduff to spare his life Macduff was angry and he told Macbeth that if he spared his life he would parade him around with a painted board written on it that Macbeth is cruel and tyrant. Thus, every one hate him
Never! I will not kiss the ground under young Malcolm’s feet! Though Birnam Wood came to Dunsinane Hill and you are opposed to me, who was never born of woman, yet I will try the last
Macbeth said this to Macduff. He told him that all the prophecies were deceptive. Since Birnam Wood moved to Dunsinane Hill and Macduff was never born of woman, Macbeth is no more charmed. However, he would try his last. Then he started fighting with Macduff. | |
