A little princess - My book review 6a01156fd16a08970c0120a5e853fa970b-320wi

“A little princess” by Frances Hodgson Burnett is one of the best children classics. The story is about little Sara who had to leave the life she loved with her father in India behind and travel to England for her Education. “The climate of India was very bad for children, and as soon as possible they were sent away from it generally to England and to school."
Sara was loved by most of the girls in her new school. She was sweet, caring, friendly, generous and clever. Then tragically her loving father died leaving her nothing. Miss Minchin, her school headmistress, turned her, from a pampered rich girl, into a poor servant who lived in the cold attic and owned nothing of her nice belongings except for a doll and a black dress. However, her sweet personality and lovely spirit never changed. She was a real princess in her own way.
The story is lovely. I want to read it again and again !I'm in love with the main character Sara Crewe because of her attitude in life , strong personality and her ability to adapt to dramatic changes in life.

I love these quotes :

“Sara often thought afterward that the house was somehow exactly like Miss Minchin. It was respectable and well furnished, but everything in it was ugly”

(( I hate Miss Michin ! ))

"But then I dare say soldiers_ even brave ones_don't really LIKE going into battle."

"She says it has nothing to do with what you look like, or what you have. It has only to do with what you THINK of, and what you DO." Lavinia said

If Nature has made you for a giver, your hands are born open, and so is your heart; and though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you can give things out of that_warm things, kind things, sweet things_help and comfort and laughter_and sometimes gay, kind laughter is the best help of all.

“When people are insulting you, there is nothing so good for them as not to say a word_just to look at them and THINK. Miss Minchin turns pale with rage when I do it, Miss Amelia looks frightened, and so do the girls. When you will not fly into a passion people know you are stronger than they are, because you are strong enough to hold in your rage, and they are not, and they say stupid things they wish they hadn't said afterward. There's nothing so strong as rage, except what makes you hold it in_that's stronger. It's a good thing not to answer your enemies.”

The author is Frances Hodgson Burnett.
اقتباس :

Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (24 November 1849 – 29 October 1924) was an English playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, in particular The Secret Garden (published in 1911), A Little Princess (published in 1905), and Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885-6).

Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Cheetham, near Manchester, England. After her father died in 1852, the family eventually fell on straightened circumstances and in 1865 emigrated to the United States, settling near Knoxville, Tennessee. There, Frances began writing to help earn money for the family, publishing stories in magazines from the age of 19. In 1870 her mother died and in 1872 she married Swan Burnett, who became a medical doctor after which they lived in Paris for two years where their two sons were born before returning to the US to live in Washington D.C. There she began to write novels, the first of which (That Lass o' Lowries), was published to good reviews. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 and made her a popular writer of children's fiction, although her romantic adult novels written in the 1890s were also popular. She wrote and helped to produce stage versions of Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess.

Burnett enjoyed socializing and lived a lavish lifestyle. Beginning in the 1880s, she began to travel to England frequently and bought a home there in the 1890s where she wrote The Secret Garden. Her oldest son, Lionel, died of tuberculosis in 1892, which caused a relapse of the depression she struggled with for much of her life. She divorced Swan Burnett in 1898 and married Stephen Townsend in 1900, and divorced him in 1902. Towards the end of her life she settled in Long Island, where she died in 1924 and is buried in Roslyn Cemetery, on Long Island.

I'm looking forward to reading the author's another story "The Secret Garden"
